I love my LT1!!!!!
I just changed the oil after 4k (mobil 1)and it burned NO oil at ALL.
Not to bad for a car with 80k. I have had very few problems with this car or the car before this one (the 93z R.I.P)*knock on wood*.

You could go a lot longer on that mobil 1. Recently there's been a test done that showed the oil is still usable at 13k miles with filter change and top off. I wouldn't go that far, but you could at least go to 7k.

Mobil 1 was the 100,000 mile oil, with filter change and top off.
I run Mobil 1 and don't care what your oil "claims" I change every 3000... I'll start selling you guys my "used" Mobil 1 if you want... Discounted prices.
$2.00/qt.
Check the Used Oil Analyses for Mobil 1 on the webpage I listed. It's not an ad-page. Real people have gone much, much further on Mobil 1 and other synthetics than 3000 with the oil holding up quite well and wear metals staying low. If you change at the mileage you are throwing your money away, unless you race a lot in which case I would change it much more often.
Unless the oil is staying clear like it was when it came out of the bottle, no one is waisting money.
If you fill the crankcase with new oil, turn the engine over three times and it's less than clear, you would theoretically be doing good by changing it right then.
It's just a matter of how obsessive you are. If you could afford to change your oil every week, we'd probably all be used to about 350,000 miles as the average live of an engine, barring other inferior parts failing first (valve springs losing tension, etc).

Many times if you change the filter, dirty oil will clean up quite a bit.
My point is that synethic oils are *made* to go longer than 3000 miles, that's the whole point of a synthetic, it doesn't break down as quickly as dino. I wish more guys around here would take a look at www.bobistheoilguy.com. I used to be a big 3000 mile oil change guy too, but after spending some time in the forums on the site, it is quite obvious that it is pointless to change a synthetic at 3k. Dinos are a different story tho.
Recently spacebears.com did a test with an ls1 camaro. It has now gone 13k miles with only a filter change and top-off (Mobil 1), and the oil has held up "useably." Even at 9-10k it protected almost as well as new.
It is a "myth" supported by lube shops that you need to change synthetic every 3k miles.

People who are very serious about their motors, (ie trucking firms etc that will pay 15k and in some case a whole lot more, to rebuild their big diesels,) are using this technology and info routinely these days. They put the oil in the trucks, they run it for a given period, send it out for analysis, and follow the recommendation of their analysts. I know personally a local mech. who now runs some of his heavy diesel engines with 1 (yes ONE) oil change per year.
If you invest big in high quality oil it is foolish to throw it out when it is no where near the end of its life cycle.
My boss has a 93 Nissan sentra with 245000 miles on it now.He changes his oil every 3000 mi.He drives the freeway every day.His oil choice is QUAKER STATE regular oil 5-30w.The only problems he has had in this time frame, was an altinator, and some batteries.Happy motoring.My02
