Well, I started tearing down my engine today for my heads/cam/longtubes install. I got to the balancer/hub and I went to the local autoparts store to pick up the 5/16 X 4 inch bolts to pull the balancer/hub. The parts store didn't have a Grade 8 hex bolt for me to use as the center bolt so I just got a low grade bolt. Well, I hook it all up and procede to start attempting to pull the balancer/hub. After a while I realize that its not coming off so I take the puller off to investigate. The center bolt that I am using is now about 2 inches long instead of the original 4 inches. The bolt has broken off and mushroomed in the crank snout threads pretty badly. So, I had to spend the next hour drilling it out and using an ez out to fix it. So here is todays lesson.... Do it right the first time!

 

Lets hope that you didnt throw the balance of the crank off. Could be very detrimental to the bearings.

 

you're not gonna throw the balance out by drilling out the bolt or even put a helicoil in there.

 

I went by mushrooming meaning that it pushed the crank material out and oblong. Im an **** person when it comes to the way my motor runs and things I do to it.

 

Nope, it just mushroomed in the threads where the crank bolt threads in. It didn't cause any damage and I just had to take my time and remove it from the crank. Something like this doesn't present any problems as far as damaging the crank, bearings or so forth unless you don't have the means to remove it properly.

 

NIce. Good to hear you learned your lesson. It doesnt pay to take shortcuts when it can cost you big time and money.
