yea when i did my opti i put the opti on and connected all the plug wires and cranked it just to make sure it started. As long as the car cranks and runs quickly shut it off and then you can put everything else back on now that your ensured your car will start. It won't hurt the car obviously because it won't heat up enough to do damage as long as you don't keep it running.

Just put the intake and MAF on and make sure you've plugged everything in the opti and crank it over. The other thing you'll want to do is make sure you don't have the WP drive shaft on the splined shaft there, because it might come off...

It takes time for the engine to heat up, so as long as you don't let it run long enough to get too hot, you are ok.

When I changed my water pump driveshaft seal, I ran my car for a minute or so without the water pump on it to make sure the seal wasn't leaking. Just hook up the stuff necessary for the car to start & run. Don't bother with anything related to the cooling system or driven by the serpentine belt. Make sure the belt is off the crank pulley.
