I am sad to say that i was involved in a car accident saturday night, I was hit head on by a 1500 chevy pick up. Both car were traviling at about 30 mph. I sufered a broken leg,concusion,Neck trama and a bulging disk in my back, Along with several cuts and bruises. The airbags never went off and the seat belt ndident look until i had already hit the winshield. The car is totaled and the insurance compnay is taking care of it. The guy in the truck was at fault...

My question is, WHY DID'ENT MY AIRBAGS OR SEATBELT WORK? 30mph + 30mph = a 60mph impact and the airbags and seatbelts both failed, causing me and my cousin several inuries.


Can anyone tell me what might have happened or if they have heard of this happening to other camaros?


Everyone else just drive safe.. you never know when the things you take for granted might fail.

 

Glad to hear that you'll recover. I would report the failure to GM. They will, most likely, want to do their own investigation into why it failed to deploy. I work with GM Engineers all of the time and you can't simulate stuff like this. When it happens, it's a learning experience.
Unfortunately for you, it was accompanied by a painful lesson. Who knows, GM may shuck out some bucks for your hospital bills, if nothing else.

more than likely your car was in an accident before and when rebuilt to save money they failed to put them back in. They are quite expensive to replace. If there is no collision on the title and no record of it in the sale, than the seller can possibly be sued. Unfortunately with our cars, people like to modify them. Which sometimes means that we disable things that would be needed in a situation such as yours. Good Luck with your problem and I hope your injuries heal they way they are supposed to

 

was your airbag light on?
If it was, the airbags wont go off in the accident.

 

Sorry to hear that...The air bag is behind the pad in the middle of the steering wheel. 4 screws hold it from the back side of the wheel. Either it was defective or the trigger(DERM) possibly, or the circuit. Not sure where they put the derm on a '94, on '96 up it's under the consol and looks like a 3"x3" alum box with a yellow sticker on it. Once it's seen a accident that triggers it, it's fried, replacement required. The dash light will set and stay on until replaced. You may want to check some things with that circuit and/or question the previous owner. On '96 up it's also known as the black box with historical data from the last 6 seconds or so before triggering. As for the seatbelt not locking, thats anybodies guess. Rust, defective part, tampered with, etc.

Sorry about the accident. I don't know, but if your air bags didn't deploy someone should pay BIG TIME.

I'd check with your lawyer.

 

If you are not the original owner of the car my first guess too was that it was probably in an accident before and they never replaced the bags. Plus the car is now almost 10 years old, theres always the possibility that the bags are still intact but one of the sensors failed. If the bags are still there and didn't work you may have a case against GM I'd think.

 

Sorry to hear about your accident, especially the bulged disk. I hope you fully recover.

Side impacts many times do not set off the air bag. Was it straight head on, or off to the side a little?

donno about u but on my ride when i step on the gas, the seat belts start to strangle me, they lock if i just hit the gas... never been in an accedent...

but just last monday my friend got into an accedent car was stopped on freeway and he slammed on the breaks and hit the car at 20mph, and airbags didnt go off, i donno if they are supposed to at that speed but just thought id mention that too

The accident was pretty much 90% head on, there is very little if any damage to the side of the car.

I'm not sure about the car being in an accident before i bought it? But if it was i would think that would have had to been disclosed at the time of purchase, right?


AS for the airbag light.. It was never on, I just had a diginostic test done less then a month age by a local chevy dealer and nothing came up.


The car was bone stock when i bought it and still is, so i know it wasent because it was disconnected for an upgrade or anything.


From what i have read, The airbag sensors are right in the front of the car behind the bumper right? Because that part of the car is now about 3 feet into the engine bay.


I am having all the proper things taken care of by a lawyer, The injuries are bad and getting worse. My neck and Back seem to get worse by the day and I am starting to forget small things.


After i was realeased by the hospital and got the info that my airbags dident deploy, It made me sick to my stomach. Because those are things you just take for granted and never have a dout about. Being the 2nd owner of the car i have some investigating to do about ther last owner and the dealership who sold me this car.


I will try and keep everyone updated as much as possible.

 

In Colorado (not sure about NV) owners are not required to report accidents to agencies like CARFAX, which may be why you don't know whether or not it was in an accident. As to whether or not you should have been told it was in an accident before you bought it, that's a whole other question entirely...

i went into a concrete wall and hit with the tip of the front clip(tore off) then went hard into the wall with the passenger quarter panel. i was going 45 in the rain hit a puddle and ended up in the expressway walls. i often wonder why my airbags didnt go off too. car hit so hard i cracked the rim, broke the rear-end, and the tranny came off the mounts. plus my seat ended up facing the passenger side at a 45* angle. the cop also asked why the airbag didnt go off. but maybe cuz i hit sideways, instead of head on. in any case, i hope you feel better and recover(luckily i just got a sore neck ) just hate to see another f-body gone. mine was totalled, now i have an even faster car, '90 mazda 626 4-cylinder hey man at least we came out alive, i give thanks for this. cars can be replaced but not a persons life. drive safely guys!!!!
