Where you at in Texas ? Iam right near DFW airport. If you have the car at your house I would consider helping you but only after my car is completed. According to UPS tracking my gasket set will be here monday. All my other parts are already here, they sent me the wrong gaskets so waiting on correct ones.

yea i live in arlington. we just diagnosed this problem yesterday, i really dont feel like paying $1600 if thats the cost, and im sure my dad wouldnt either. on a scale of one to ten how experienced are you with replacing that yourself? how old are you? im a freshman at UTA on a budget, i could get the heads reworked and then possibly talk to you about putting them back in.

Sounds like you need to pull it and build a 383 now.

From what I'm seeing, a ported LT1 casting will outperform a stock LT4 casting.

Don't need $6K for a 383...not trying to change your mind, just let you know what you need:

Parts:
--------
Crank
Rods
Pistons
Rings
Bearings
gaskets
ARP main bolts or studs
ARP head bolts or studs
oil pump & pickup
camshaft

Machine Work:
-------------------
Bore
Clearance for 383
Deck surface
Hot tank/magnaflux
Install cam bearings & freeze plugs
balance
couple other things possibly

That will take care of the bottom-end for you. Put your original top-end back on it, and as you get money get the bolt-ons you need to complement your 383

Should be able to come out to under $3K EASILY, probably under $2500 if you can find the deals.

My crank/rods/pistons were $982 for Scat 9000 Crank, Scat 4340 forged capscrew I-Beams, SRP pistons

Rings are $100

The 3 bearing sets are ~$70

Gaskets will run you ~$200-$250

Main Studs are $52.88, bolts are about 1/2 that

Head Studs are $106.88, and same bolts are cheaper

Oil pump & pickup ~$50 or so?

Cam figure $200 or so

Machine work & assembly will be between $600-1000 depending how in-depth you get.

Then just bolt your top-end back on it and scoot!

Iam 35, actually worked for Don Davis there in arlington for 12 years, Freeman Pontiac for 3 years. I consider my self a great mechanic, pay big attention to detail. My second LT1 and have done all my repairs myself. The best way to answer your question will be after my car is back together and running, then we can talk further.

oh sure. i kinda need it to drive to school and to work this summer but ill be ok if i put it in the garage for months while i read some books on what im doing of course then id need a tranny rebuild and a new rear end

i meant $6 for a NEW 383 from agostino, but thats an LS1, just an estimate in my head.

ill def do a 383 swap here in the future when i have some stable money. the car should be paid off here in the next year and a half then i can spend money on it tons more. for now though we have to figure out how to make my car drivable again
