Question HP gains from P&P Stock Heads

How much is to be gained on Port and Polishing stock heads, on a stock setup? i dunt have the money to buy new heads anytime soon, so i was thinking about this, i doubt there is much, but i wanna be sure, ya kno. Is it a waste of money to get it done by a shop or is it better to do a home version? Thanks guys im kinda a newbie to these things.
Any info is greatfully appreciated.

Re: HP gains from P&P Stock Heads

Ok to want to learn, but cylinder heads are the heart of an engine. It will make or break the powerband so I personally recommend against porting your own heads unless you can get with an experienced porter. Then watch and learn.
If you want to do it on your own, follow the book I referenced in the other thread, get a junk head from a local builder (they usually have some around) and experiment. Keep in mind that good porting is not just about flowing lots of air. It's about creating the highest efficiency and making sure the fuel doesn't wet out the combustion chamber. The seat, venturi and throat area are very important. Every little change makes a big change in performance, so this is sensitive. I've heard porters talk about changing the throat diameter .010" the wrong way and losing 30hp (race engines).

Good luck.
