HP Diff. between the mild cams?

Does any one know what the HP difference would be between a Hot cam, CC 305, XE 218/224, XE 224/230 or any other cam in this range? I'm looking to get the most HP I can [ Is'nt everyone] and still pass the Ill. smog laws.
This is with a good set of Lt1 heads and a smog tune, If I have to, example XE 224/230. But if it is'nt at least 20 HP the Hot cam wins.
Any input, solid or otherwise would be a help.

I would wager that the CC502 (218/224) would make very similar power to the Hotcam, yet would run cleaner. I assume you'll be running 1.6 ratio rockers, so that will add a couple degrees duration to your cam (about 220/226), with the Hotcam being 218/228 with 1.6 rockers. BTW, look at my sig and I have the CC502 and it's nice; can't wait to get it dynoed.

onebadponcho,
Do you have any track times to go with your set-up? What kind of RPM will it spin to?

Thank you, Rick

onebadponcho -- I'm curious about the CC XE 218/224/112 performance as well. Did you lose any bottom end compared to stock? How does the car pull in the 1000-1500 rpm range compared to stock? Any loss of drivability at all with that cam?

RichJ,
How do you like your XE 224/230 on the 114. Do you have to smog it, and can it pass? I'm trying to figure out what the biggest cam is I can use and still pass Ill. emmisions. The question has been asked many times but I'm not sure if it can pass.

I passed VA emissions with it and also have a friend with the same cam that passed. I have Hooker LTs and my friend has ASM shorties. This is the two speed dyno test. Same as California I believe.

I like the cam okay. It's sort of big enough to lose a little drivability but not big enough to make big power. I'm actually thinking of swapping it out for something a little smaller, knowing that I'll lose some top end but also knowing that it will be better to drive on the street. I'd like to be able to cruise at 1200 rpm or so comfortably and this cam doesn't have any guts down there.

RichJ,
Thanks for your help. But I have to ask, why are you at 1200 RPM with a six speed? I though the 224/230 made good power down low. So if you dropped down a couple of gears, does'nt it make good power? Maybe smaller is better?

I generally cruise between 1500-2000 rpm, but I'd like to be able to cruise lower to decrease interior noise, improve gas mileage and also pull away from stoplights without slipping the clutch as much (especially with my street twin clutch). Sure I can drop gears to really get up and go but I guess it depends on what you want. My car is very very smooth for a cammed car and the powerband is great on a road course. It's just not ideal for slow traffic. I find myself driving my other much more stock cars and wishing that I could drive the Camaro the same way with same low speed smoothness. What I really need are a bunch more cubic inches so I can have more bottom end while retaining a good top end.

Well, I'm kind of "long gone" right now (gotta love the military), so no track times or dyno #s yet.
Obviously, you lose some driveability compared to the stock cam, where the car will actually pull smoothly in 6th gear from a fast idle. I'm still on a stock tune and there's some cam surge, but at about 1500-2000rpm, it smooths out pretty well.
I've revved it to 6300rpm a couple times; it seemed to pull pretty much all the way there. How high I rev it at the track will depend on what it does on the dyno, though.
I still get over 27mpg on the highway, and with a tune I think that will improve also. Regardless of what this thing puts down on the dyno/track, I really like this cam. It drives really nice-sounds good too.
