How To Test ECT?

I need to test the ECT for the guage on the side of the block near the #1 plug. I had it break off last fall while doing my header install and put a new one in scince the heads and cam.. I havent street drivin the car or had it running for longer then 2 mins. So im not sure if its working or not. But my Tstat housing is real hot along with my alternator .. But anyway how can i test this to see if its good?

Im asuing the guage works off resistance or voltage, so can i apply voltage to the conector in some way or apply resistance so i can see the guage sweep the dash

thanks for all the help

Get a multimeter and a thermometer. The resistance will change inversely with temperature (higher temp, lower resistance):

It should read something like this:

T* (F): Resistance:
212 177
194 241
176 332
158 467
140 667
122 973
113 1188
104 1459
95 1802
86 2238
68 3520
50 5670
41 7280
32 9420

(baiscally you can check it with an ice cube and boiling water)

There are 2 temp sensors in your car. One goes to the guage in the dash and one goes to the PCM. The one on the water pump goes to the PCM, the one on the drivers side cyl head goes to the dash guage.
