I seen the post earlier about hardend or chromoly pushrods. It reminded me to post my question. I have a set of pushrods in my garage that was thrown into a package with my heads I bought from a private seller. I was wondering if there is a way to physically tell the difference between just hardend or chromoly? Can I do anything to tell? Also they are "Comp". Just not sure which ones....

Your answer will be there. I believe you have the hardned ones, but check the site. Good info on other parts of the engine too!!

 

If by "Comp" you mean Competion Cams, I would think that all they would sell are hardened ones. Call them and ask. Another way is, if you know somebody that works in a factory or a machine shop that has a Rockwell tester.

 

i remember once reading you should NOT be able to scratch the hardened pushrods. now chromoly on the other hand i have no clue about. ive seen this question asked before and nobody seems to know how you can distinguish between the two. if you can weigh the pushrod accurately then i could weigh one of my 7.200"(OE) length hardened rods in a fews days when i tear into the motor with a grain scale. im not really sure if they would weigh differently or not but you could do a search around for the properties of regular and chromoly steel which might help you.

or you could call Comp and ask them.

I always thought that hardened pushrods were the chromoly pushrods until now.

I bent a hardened pushrod and am now having some chromoly ones put in. These chromoly ones (TrickFlow???) have this black glossy layering, can't remember what it is called, and they don't have the ball-shaped tips at the end.

 

Take a "fine" file and give it a rub (preferably in the cutting direction of the file). If it just glances off then its a hardened rod, if not it's not.

Thanks but will that tell me if they are chromoly? Will chromoly scratch easy? Or will the file glance off like hardend steel? I have a set of hardend in my car right now. I am just wondering if these I have sitting on my bench are chromoly...
