How to replace coil wire?
How to replace coil wire?
Well, my car has been shooting sparks from my coil pretty badly making my car run like crap and not accelerating and dying out at times while parked. So I took the wire off and when doing so the actual spark plug wire that attaches to the coil just ripped in half. So I got a new spark plug wire set and plugs and was wondering. HOW DO I REPLACE THE COIL WIRE? Does it just pop off, screw off or what? I have never done the wires before so this may be a stupid question...also, if i just change that bad coil wire for now instead of changing them all out will I be ok for a while until I get to the others as I need the car for work tonight? Well as always, thanks for any and all help. -Kevin
No such thing as a stupid question. I doubt any of the parts stores around have just a single wire, so you'll have to try to find a speed shop of some sort. You can buy just one 8mm wire, MSD, Taylor, it doesn't matter what brand. Then you just cut it to the length you need, strip the insulation about a half inch, bend it over and then crimp the metal piece on. (I can't remember the name of it) Then you use some dielectric grease that should come with the wire and slide in over the boot. Now, you have to make sure that you get one with a straight or 180 degree boot. Slide the boot on until the metal piece is right at the edge. Then everything just presses into the opti and the coil. Good luck!
what if i already bought a cheap set of autolite plugs for now since thats what i did...i know the 180 degree boot just pops off the coil but does the other side of the wire just pop out also? do i just pull it off?

Yes, they both pop off. The opti end is just like all the other opti ends for the spark plugs and the coil end is just like the end that plugs into the spark plugs. It's basically just a very short spark plug wire. So are you changing all of the wires at the same time as the plugs? If so, there should be a wire for the coil in that set.
Well, I bought the whole set but since I have to have the car running for work in only an hour im just going to change out the coil wire for now and do the others later on...will that be ok for now and do i need to put that grease on the ends
