Do I have to remove the starter to get the oil dipstick out?

No. There's a bolt on a very small bracket that's part of the dipstick. Remove bolt, and twist/tug. It'll come out eventually

grab a clamp wrench..clamp it...twist and push stick upwards from bottom of car while some is pulling on it from the top (no too hard it will collapse)...after a little movement you will see the "lip" that sealed it into the pan...grab a flathead screwdriver and hammer and put the screwdriver on the lip and hammer the screwdriver up...it takes some time but DONT collapse or crush the dipstick and use a person pulling from the top throughout all of this..have fun

My dipstick has a ring on the end of it. I just pull it out. <shrug>

The dipstick tube is another story.

To remove my tube it took two people to get it out. Second time I took it out it broke.

After I installed my headers it was impossible to get back in in one piece so I cut it below the bracket and spliced it with heavy duty rubber hose and 2 hose clamps. I also had to bend it a little bit to get it to fit with the way the new primaries were.

i'd like to know as well, everyone says these headers do not require notching of the k-member, etc. - however they do not mention the dipstick, i heard its a real PITA trying to work around that thing

If you aren't gonna do headers just because you will have to remove the dipstick... then you don't want an LT1.

With the starter and dipstick TUBE (lol) outta the way and the car jacked up that side is a cinch for header install. Small amount of work for power .
