How reliable is temp sender?

I think I have been chasing a gremlin for the past few days. My cooling fans are not coming on when temp gauge is close to red zone. I have replaced the temp sensor but now I think thats not my problem. As it sits now the temp guage can hit red and still will not get fans.. BUT If I was to disconnect the temp sensor the fans kick in as if the sensor is hot thus low voltage and pcm says fans on.

What is the chances that my temp sender has a mind of its own and making me think I have a fan problem?

Am I being too analytical?

Maybe I should just have a beer or two and see what happens when the temp gauge pegs out

My dash gauge and PCM reading (monitored by scanner) have always been very close. No problems by me.

my stock temp guage and my guage in my pillar always read the same (the stock one tends to be around 5 degrees cooler is all...but never any more than that). If you wante peace of mind about it install an aftermarket one.

Re: How reliable is temp sender?

Just wanted to mention that there are 2 coolant sensors, the one in the head is for the gauge and the one in the water pump is for the PCM .
