how to pull a LT1 engine
how to pull a LT1 engine
I need to put in a new LT1 in my 96z28. I was wondering if the motor has to come out the bottom or if i can use a cherry picker and take it out the top. I don't have access to a lift so i can only pull it out through the top.
Use the search feature man, this is another one of those subjects that has been beaten to death.
But to answer your question, its personal preference whether to pull it from the top or bottom. You dont need a lift to take it out the bottom, and personally I find it easier to remove it from the bottom even though I dont have a lift.

I dropped mine out the bottom and will never pull it out the top again. This is a great link for showing you how to do it:

Took mine out the bottom, all accessories attached. Just make sure you disconnect any of the electrical connections from the engine harness that go into the firewall. Also don't make my mistake and not completely disconnect the tranny linkage!
Edit: Adjustable jackstands are a god send in this as well. As I was lifting the engine up, one of my biggest fears was dropping the car on myself or the engine. As I got the car higher and higher I set the jackstands up accordingly so in the event of it falling it may have only dropped a half an inch. Once the car is at the height you want it lower the car onto the jackstands.

As you can see the adjustable ones are a huge help.
