How much will gears help?
How much will gears help?
Well I was looking into a rebuild just to be on the safe side but ther is no way I can afford it. I was just wondering how much gears are goin to help me. Also I would like to know what my options are other than 4.10s. How high am I giong to be reving on the highway? By the way I have a m6 car with headers, hypertech, highflow cat, cai.
Re: How much will gears help?
at 65 mph im sitting at 2K rpm in 6th w/ 4.10s. last week i did about 50/50 city highway driving with a lot of screwing around stop light to stop light and still averaged 19mpg. the deeper gears dont require you to put the throttle down as hard to accellerate. the car has better driveability then with 3.42s, and is a lot more responsive in 6th gear with less throttle.

i have GM 4.10s, run et streets every day and havent had a problem. you need a TA cover, GM or motive gears and someone who knows what they are doing to install them. and dont over fill the rear end. use the stock fill hole by the pinion, not the one on the TA cover that up higher. if you do the rear end will leak.
Re: How much will gears help?
Trans Am rear end girdle/cover.
Not actually from a Trans Am. Its just the model name I believe and I forget who makes it. I was always inder the impression though that the Rear End Cover was pointless on a 10-Bolt and didnt do much if anything to stiffen it up. For 100$ something dollars though it is cheap insurance if your going to be on the stocker for a while. But then again, so is running street tires instead of something sticky.

o and to awnser the origional post:
It will make your first gear useless with 4:10s on street tires. They will just bake at WOT. I would want less of a gear, such as 3:73's and if you plan in long term on making over 400RWHP, 3.42's are about perfect.
On a bolt on car, 4:10s will get you about .3 in the 1/4 if you have nice traction, and will make the car alot funner to drive around.
