How much torque can a T-56 Hold?? Any difference in a LS1 T-56??

I was wondering how much torque the tranny is rated for, or how much it well hold. My friend and I are planning to build a stocked and blown 99 LS1.

Look at Taner; he's running his T56 at 9.68 @140mph!!! It's probably the only thing besides body parts that's still on the car from when he first got it, lol.

I hear that you can get a few upgrades the T56 is damn unbreakable...the reason I bought my M6 Camaro!

The T56 is rated to handle 450 lbs/ft of torque. The ZO6 and Viper T56s are different, and are upgraded to handle the power of those cars. I believe the F-car T56 can be upgraded to Viper/ZO6 strength, although I can't remember exactly which parts are different. BTW, the mainshaft is quite vulnerable on high power/hard launching cars, although Taners car seems to be doing just fine.

The only thing Taner has is a Viper output shaft which is a little beefier, I dont know if he ever broke it and had to replace it, or just replaced it so he wouldnt have to break it. But he has over 700 ft/lbs at the wheels I believe, 630hp at the wheels for sure, and that was last year before the 9.68 run.

Im kinda curious, hopefully hell read this and let us know. What parts were treated as well if you read this Taner. I think this tranny is pretty bulletproof up to like 500/500 at the wheels Ill bet, Completely stock. Its probably just like a ten bolt though, in the sense that one guy might have 1000 rwtq and no problems, and another guy with 400rwtq that busts the input shaft.

well i ran my stock t56 for years and had no problems from it at all. the numbers in my sig were dynoed with the t56 since i have installed the th400 and doing a complete engine rebuild and converting to solid roller. the t56 in the lt1 cars is a beast but if your car reall hooks thats when youll break ****.

i can add some input

actually the trans internals are stock, i broke output shaft and had it cryo'ed with a few other parts, the viper conversion was merely a thought last year, now it is a reality. if i ever break it then i will goto the viper conversion, i love the 6speed to much1

how else can you go nines and then take the car on a 4 hr trip, and get about 20 mpg????

Looks like D&D has developed an adapter so you can put a Viper T-56 in a Camaro.

You would have to get a whole new clutch setup to put a Viper conversion right. You could possibly just use an aftermarket viper clutch if the PP would bolt up. That would be rad!

Well i have heard all this stuff for the longest time about these things being so tuff...but a month ago I ripped my tranny to hell and back i was hauling *** down the road and was going from second to third and missed " for the first time in my life " and it ripped the threads off the output shaft and did alot of other misclaneous damage thrue out the tranny running me well over 1000 grand just in parts to repair the stupid thing ..Maybe it was accumulated abuse catching up with the tranny it has 166k and gets beat real hard every day of its existance . This is the first time my car has ever broke down on me . But i was running a dual friction clutch and hit from 2nd to 5th at about 6100RPM I hope it never happens again because I have spent a fortune fixing it .
