Define "rebuild". Is there a problem that needs fixing? Are you just looking to refresh it some base on mileage or future performance goals? Looking to build a performance engine?

The roady wagon out in my driveway has 227K miles on it. Last compression test was somewhere around 190K and was around 200psi. These things do not wear like gen 1 motors did, partly because of the injection and partly because of a very nice ring package. Anything cheap is going to be a step BACKWARDS.

Might consider a rebearing job based on mileage, heck maybe even rings if you really want to but if you want to actually improve things it is going to cost money, probably not the qhuck and cheap project you have in mind.

More appropriate questions:

1.)How fast do you want to go?
2.)How long do you want the rebuild to last?
3.)How much money is the most you can spend?? (now add 50% to that)..
4.)Do you mind rebuilding if you don't spend the time finding a decent builder and you want to take shortcuts on parts?
5.)How fast do you need the car back on the road?

Man, I know its a shady answer, but really, its tough to say for sure what to expect. A "regular" rebuild around here is going to go for around $1300.

Good luck and the best advice I could offer is to call every single shop and ask every question you can think of.

Take care,
Ivan

so if there is nothing really wrong with my engine, which has 140,000 miles, should I even worry about rebuilding it?

No, there is not unless you are planing on rebuilding for high performance.
