How much play in the Water Pump drive?

How much play in the Water Pump drive?
I cant seem to get the water pump drive seal in the timing cover to stop leaking oil. I have replaced it 3 times and it continues to leak. I am very careful not to rip the seal and the seal doesnt look ripped when I take it off.
The drive sticking out of the timing cover has some play in it. Is this normal, or should there be no slop in it at all. I can wiggle it back and forth.
