I've seen many claim a gain of 10-12 at the wheels.

I gained 17 rwhp and 6 rwtq from 1.6RR, electric waterpump, and tuning. Gained 3 MPH at the track, dropped 3 tenths. I don't think many people see the gains that I have though, my car is a freak.

Stock springs are very borderline. Said to be good up to around .490 lift, I never found real limit numbers from GM though. With the stock cam and springs, valve lift is .447 & .458. With the 1.6RR, the lift increases to .477 & .488.

I decided to go with aftermarket ones just to be safe. I used the 611 springs from Combination Motorsports good up to .600 lift. I got the Comp Cams Pro Magnum 7/16" stud, so it would be stronger. Non-self aligning because they're better and not as noisy. Non-SA requires guideplates, I used GM ones.

They need adjusted, not that tough if you do it right. The rockers aren't too difficult to install, fairly simple, bolt on. But the springs, that's the tough PITA part, since you have to worry about dropping valves. I used my air compressor with a special fitting for the spark plug hole, did each cylinder... it's sort of time consuming.

They don't add ANY horsepower. They'll free up some though.

So are the "Proform 1.6RR's" any good?

I'm limited to handtools and these are self aligning Rockers....Is there a tool that can be used to "drop the valves"?

I would say 10 rwhp is a fair estimate. You will need springs too.

How do they not add hp and only free up horsepower? The same could be said with headers.

You can try the TDC method. Turn the crank, which puts the piston on the cylinder you're working on at TDC, the valve shouldn't fall very much at all, it will rest on the piston.

Or fill the cylinder with rope, I've heard of that as well.
