Angry How many water pumps does it take to....

How many water pumps does it take to make it to 100k miles?? In my case it will be at least 4 !!! Just pulled out no. 3 and it had taken out no. 2 opti. 85k miles on the odo. Why does my car eat so many pumps? Is this typical? The first two were new AC Delco pumps, the last are the more pricey Advance Auto lifetime warranty variety (not remanufactured).

You guys will get a kick out of this... I must share. I decided on Thur to think about selling the Z and getting a Ford Lightning b/c I really need a truck, even if it is a 2wd sport truck.... one that I had seen on a car lot that day. So I go to test drive it on Fri, and that's when my opti bites the dust. Ha! I guess you guys would say that I got what I deserved! It is the only ford I'd ever buy, and only b/c Chevy won't build something comparable. geeze

How exactly are they failing? Maybe something else is wrong.

I've had to replace it once so far. Maybe Slopo is right, something else is wrong?

Re: How many water pumps does it take to....

By failing I mean they start leaking heavily out the weep hole which means a bearing or seal is failing (can't remember which). I don't know how I could do anything differently to keep them from failing. I probably only put 15k miles on this last one over 4.5 years.... I can't recall if I changed the coolant b/w the last one and now, probably should have considering the # of years but that wouldn't explain the other failures too. I run a 160 stat and the ECM is programmed for that by Fastchips. I use only top of the line coolant. THe coolant did look a little brown this time. It's not like I run the thing at 5k rpm everywhere I go! Just some occasional WOT runs a couple track visits a year, and 99% of the time just normal driving around town and thru the country. I dunno

You don't have any mixed coolant in there do you? Sorry had to ask.

No, definitely not. I've heard the horror stories about mixing the red and green! I just flushed all that junk out of my blazer this spring. It had gummed up my heater core.

2nd was replaced by GM dealer, new AC/Delco

I'd say get a CSI and be done with it. No more weep hole/bearings to wear out. With the streak you currently have the CSI should last twice as long.
Good luck just sounds like a few badly built waterpumps.

Second vote for an electric. I got my CSI for around $150 so they are not expensive. I would give the Advanced Auto pump one more shot since it is free but if it fails I would go electric.

I hear that bro. If this new Advance pump dies, I'll definitely do the CSI thing then. Thanks.

I've had one **** out on me at about 40k miles. I'm on my 2nd pump, hopefully it holds up for a bit. Next time I'll just go electric Fortunately the first didn't take out my opti (still on my stock one)

well, last pump install my mechanic friend dumped a can of some white milky substance in the pump. i can't remember its name or exact function other than it was supposed to help the pump last longer. other than that, no i have always been afraid of "snake" oils
