How many miles is TOO many?
How many miles is TOO many?
I found two LT1's at a local yard for $300 and $335. they have 99k and 100k. i figure at this point they need a rebuild. would i need to? and are there any parts that where out within 100k on these motors? thanks

LT1 is still just a SBC-like engine.
No need to rebuild it after 100k but since you didn't put those 100k on there you have no clue how it was treated so it makes sense to rebuild it. But as there are SBC's with 250k miles there are LT1's with 250k miles (and 79 new optisparks
)
you could just take it apart , inspect , replace bearings , seals and gaskets.
It all depends on the condition of the engine.

btw if you can hear the engines run and they run fine then no there is no need to but you also have to be prepared to pull the engine again when/if it breaks and then fix/rebuild it.
so IMHO it's not worth putting it in without atl east inspecting it after pulling off intake/heads/oil pan

100k is great, I didn't even do heads/cam till beyond 100k. However if the engine was abused, then its a toss up that only testing will show.

95 has a different timing cover/optispark setup, and is "better" if you are getting these components with them, otherwise the timing cover seperately is $40? 93-94 Optipuke is the worst of the bunch due to a nearly wide open back with virtually no seal.
Buick, so in theory an old person could have owned it, who may not have maintained it which = abuse
your probably fine though, they are probably just wrecked cars eh?

I would not necessarily say "old person" = abuse due to neglect. As a matter of fact, I know of such a person who has a Roadmaster and he takes care of that engine better than most people do their dogs. He helped me with my waterpump R&R. So, an LT-1 out of a Roadmaster would probably be in better shape than one out of a Camaro/Firebird/etc....
The least you could do is pull the intake off and have a look at the top end and see how much sludge is there. If it's clean, then the motor is probably in pretty good shape and had regular oil changes. If not, then who knows. I'd still rather rebuild it no matter what as it's already out of a car.
