How loud should my vavletrain be?
How loud should my vavletrain be?
At almost 100k miles my car is running as good as it ever has. That being said my valvetrain seems to be noisier than it was a few years ago. At idle it is about teh same, but if I manually rev it while standing over the engine there is alot of noise, nothing that is at one certain point under a valve cover but it is just loud in general. I am considering opening the valve covers this spring and doing 1.6RRs, valve springs and all that is needed with them. At 100k miles would my springs most likely be worn a bit? I do not get on my car all the time but I do push the crap out of it once in a while as we all do. Thanks for any tips.....doing RRs and valve springs looks like a fun fun job
Re: How loud should my vavletrain be?
what does the noise your hearing sound like?
if it sounds like a TICK then my guess would be an exhaust leak
i thought my valve train was goin crazy for a while and then i found a little hole in my cat so that ended up being my prob and i have over 160000 miles on my engine so i didnt doubt valve train problems

If it just sounds like a loud sewing machine your fine. Now if you hear popping or clanking your springs may be at their lives end, have a bent push rod, or damaged rocker. I doubt it would be a lifter as that noise tends to go away when you rev the motor.
Like clutch said, if its more like a metallic crisp sounding clicking noise it could be an exhaust leak. check to make sure all of your spark plugs are tight and then check your exhaust manifolds or headers if you have them. Its not uncommon for a stock manifold having 100k miles on it to be cracked.
Its not very hard to pull the valve covers if your that concerned.

That is exactly how I would describe it, a sewing machine
So I guess it is fine, just noisy that is all. Thanks, /me is paranoid

When I talked to the guys at Comp Cams they recommended that the springs and stuff be changed every 60000 miles. I know they'll go a lot more miles but they probably start to show wear.
