how long will these engines last?

im looking at buying one of two '93 z28's...one with 120,000 and one with 146,000 ....this seems a little above average miles on these cars. how long will they last?...if they both show even compression on all 8 cyclinders, and dont burn any oil, can i expect good performance for the next few years i want to own the car? my future plans will be 6psi supercharger, new cam, new injectors, and new tb...will this high milage motor stand up to all this?

well i would go with the car that has the lower miles, putting a supercharger in a motor with that many miles on i wouldnt do, because it puts alot of extra stress on the motor, i herd for a reliable source, the highest he would go is 64k on the engine, if its stock

the one with 120,000 he said he had a tech come out and check it out, said it was all good...and did smog tests...and it didnt blow out anything bad...but its about 300 miles from my house...its only 4,900 with a brand new clutch (still being put in actually)...so it sounds kinda fishy to be so cheap...the other was driven by an older man who just passed away, and the son is selling it, asking 5,700 for it...i only have about 5,500...but my mom said she could help me out about 2k worth...but i really dont want her to, i like owning my own things completely

I just bought 94 Z M6 for 5800$ and I've been told that I paid too much. You should be able to get him to lower that price enough, just remember insurance and title/registration fees, good luck

if the compression test is done right and it comes out good and the engine idles fine and doesn't make any noises or do anything otherwise out of the ordinary, then i'd get it. taken care of these engines last a long time... the key is to find out that hasn't been ragged on and has been taken care of regularly.

don't buy from a kid!

Obviously, the lower mileage one is better if all other factors are the same. Ask for service records, if they bother to keep them and keep up with needed service it's a really good sign. If you can really check compression on both, then start there, but that is not the only test of an engine's health. If you're taking them to a shop, offer to change the oil, and then have the old filter cut open to check for metal.

In the end, I think both cars are a little high mileage for a blower. Save for building a strong bottom end instead. A cam and maybe heads would give you some fun in the meantime if you want, and could be used again in a rebuild. I just got a quote from Nu-Tek motorsports on building a me a strong N2O shortblock for $2600. That's not bad when the only stock items are the crank and block. Forged pistons, rods, a new cam, lifters and bearings are all included.

Just be carefull about spending 3K on a blower, they are really tough on engines. This being said, I've seen people who run them on daily drivers with 100k+ motors. I've been wrong before.

Good luck and have fun!

Run a carfax too!
But generally, these cars can last longer then some people expect. Theres people here with over 200k and running strong. And remember, when it does go...its an excuse for a 355 or 383 baby!

The engines are not such an issue if kept up, its the sensors/distributor and such that go bad from time to time.

Some times buying it at a higher mileage can be benificial. If the car has over 150,000 on it you know a bunch of stuff has been replaced already. That explains why people usually ask a higher than blue book value, in effort to try to cut their loss on all the parts they put in. Thats not a rule of thumb just something to consider, it all depends on how the car was driven and maintained.

I have seen IROCs with over 200,000 miles on them that run like day one and i have seen a 2 year old Z-28 with under 30,000 miles on it that wasnt worth the 40 seconds it took me to reply to your message.

hehe very true

I would definitely NOT recommend a supercharger for such a high mileage car. I have 77K on my car and i'm not gonna even consider a supercharger till my engine is rebuilt. I would just go with a little bigger cam, like the hot cam kit or a cc305 and just enjoy the car for awhile, and save money to rebuild the engine when its time comes.
