how long to break in a motor?
how long to break in a motor?
my motor has aprox. 300 miles on it since the rebuild. the rebuild consisted of re ringing the pistons, new bearings all new sensors and such, we honed the cylinders too. but with this many miles shouldnt the rings be seated? every time i take it over 3000 it smokes like beat up honda. the only other thing i could think of is that there is something wrong with the heads as we didnt do anything to them. we just took them off the bad motor and stuck them on this motor, but they only had 60k on them roughly. is there something wrong or am i just prematurely freaking out?
Re: how long to break in a motor?
Give it some time.It depends on the rings and the install process.
Ya are to the mileage ya can go over 3000 and maybe tach it out once or twice for the next 200 miles if the oil pressure is OK.
Did ya get a tune? is the smoke fuel or oil?

oh its deffinately burnin oil, on the woodward dream cruise i used 2 quarts of oil the whole day, but the car was running almost the whole day, went through almost 2 tanks of gas. my dad was saying something about one or more of the cylinders might be egged so it might take longer because when we rebuilt the motor we just honed it and didnt bore it any.

You say you're concerned about the heads... Are you getting any coolant in your oil, or vice versa?
Re: how long to break in a motor?
ill know for sure this morning when i go and get my oil changed. but it was suggested to me that it might be the valve guide seals because i used to spray nitrous on the old motor. if this is the case how hard is it to change them?

Ya got to remove the springs to change them.
Did ya pour oil all over the rings when installing? Are they molly rings?
