I believe there is a trick to make a tool for that from a highlighter pen body of the right OD. Might search for that, or just look around for one.

I just slide the seal over a socket.

I just used the H2o pump coupler..It's the right size. it's easy to position your seal 'lips' orientation on properly.
My stealership didn't have one but napa carried a felpro set that has all seals\gaskets for the front timing cover.

Socket barrel diameters vary by brand and I don't recall the exact size. I used a deep Craftsman socket that was barely larger than the surface of the drive gear the seal has to slip over. The seal was just snug on it.
The reason I used the socket was that it was already nice and smooth and would not harm the seal.

There is also this: http://www.impalasuperstore.com/nais...TOPIC_ID=30984 that was posted since this thread was started.

yes. the problem was that it would come off the socket before it went on the shaft

This helped me tremendously - and I used his method.

http://www.impalasuperstore.com/nais...t,seal,install

But, even with this I messed up the first seal.

I think the socket I was using to seat the seal slipped on one of my strikes and mangled the outer seal. Of course I didn't know this until I was fully reassembled. Had to redo the entire project after getting it together and finding a leak.

The first time I used oil. The second time I greased it up.

All the tips are in the previous info. If you watch what you are doing, it's really pretty easy.
