How hard is a cam swap?
How hard is a cam swap?
Not just that. What all is needed? How much time? Which cam should i go with, i dont care about gas mileage. My car has 105k on it, what else should i replace. I know quite a bit about these cars. I have done the headers, rebuilt opti, waterpump, by myself. So i think i can do it.

Because it takes less time to do a search than to post a new thread. I've answered this same question at least 5 times already.
Shoebox's cam install page.

People cant just pick out which cam is for you your going to have to do some research. What kinda of gains are you looking for how much drivability do you want to lose? Who are you going to get to tune it? ect.
And some LT1s (mostly high mileage/ even some low ones) are know to throw bearings after cam installs.

Re: How hard is a cam swap?
A messy install is just one factor in possibly ruining the bearings.
Most people with higher mileage will ruin them because they've reved it all 100K up to 5500 RPM and then they go 6500+.
Either way you look at it, the bearings are weaker with more mileage on the engine. Many don't like the stress of the new power and/or new rpm range.

Re: How hard is a cam swap?
Cam swaps are risky if you dont keep everything clean... doesnt matter what cam you install. The biggest factor IMO is how well taken care of the motor was before the cam install and not necessarily the mileage. Lets say the oil changes were done ever 3k miles and a lot of those miles were rolled over on the highway, then you are better off. Where you find problems is when you tear into a motor that has sludge all over the heads and in the lifter valley because that crud gets knocked down in the motor and runs thru the bearings... the chances are greater that the debris will get clogged either in the pickup screen or in the oil passages. When that happens you will need a rebuild!
Re: How hard is a cam swap?
The cam installation in itself isn't risky IMO, it's how the car is driven after the install. Most guys get "happier" with the right foot after the install and accelerate the wear process on an already tired motor. FWIW I put a GM847 in a car with about 80k, never had a problem related to the cam install, 20k later I'm rebuilding, but not because I had to, because I wanted to. If you want to put in a cam go ahead, not that difficult, as posted above, if the engine breaks, oh well, fix it.
