Question How to gut a cat out??

I unbolted my catback last weekend and was going to gut my cat out but i didn't know what to use i jamed a big screwdriver in there with a hammer but realized it wouldn't work.
What did you use and how did you do it? Also i would like to do it with the y-pipe still on the car, is this possible?

A screwdriver should work. You just have to do it many times to crack and break that ceramic layer.
I used a piece of pipe and a screwdriver myself. Took about 15 minutes to do, then 2 weeks later I replaced it with a new cat. Didn't like the sound of the gutted cat at all.

K-Bar and your bare hands ..... Ooops thats the Marine in me talking....

I used a hammer and a crowbar and just banged it up till it would fall out. The Y-pipe almost definitely has to come off. It makes it much easier. Good Luck. You don't want to breathe that stuff in. Cancer causing

Forgot to mention. Might want to consider replacing the cat with a pipe. It will sound much better and less work to do.

Thanks for the quick replies! I'm going with a lt setup this spring so i don't really want to mess with puting a new pipe in, How thick is the mesh looking stuff inside the cat?

If I remember correctly, there are two layers of it inside. Maybe my cat went bad that way, who knows, but the first one was pretty thick. I'd say about 3". The second one was maybe 2"-2.5". I think there might be a third layer which looked to me like some sort of asbestos (I guess that would explain why it could cause cancer) but that one isn't tough to take out at all.

My cat plugged itself once so I had to gut it to get the car running.

I took off the I-pipe, broke all the innards up with tools etc. I sucked alot of it out with a shop vac, then started the car and gave it a couple good revs.

It sounded like crap. I bought a new cat the next day.
