how to "gut" the cat?

exactly how is this done?is this something that can be done while it is still on the car by unhooking the flange (i cant remember whether it connects to the y-pipe or the i-pipe) and gutting it, or does it have to come completely off?an exhaust shop prolly wont do this for me seeing as how its illegal but how hard is it to do, and how long does it take to do?

I just unbolted the i pipe from the cat (cat is welded onto y pipe) then using a crow bar beat the **** out of it, started car every time I got tired, to blow all the crap out. Do that untill no more is in the cat, and you're done.

its not mushy, its a ceramic like honeycomb. it crumbles when you break it with the crowbar. Thats why you have to blow it all out before you reattach the i pipe, (dont want the **** getting in your muffler)

First you gotta tie his paws up, or he'll scratch the hell out of you when you stick the knife in his belly. Just take the cat off, set it aside, and use a piece of pipe in place of it. I got creative with my 3rd gen by taking a 3" pipe, and welding the heat shield from an old cat I had laying around to the pipe. It looks like a cat at a quick glance, and doesn't have that tinney rattle. If I have to pass smog some day, I can just put it back on without shelling out $100 for a new one. Just a thought.

The Shifter is B&M and the fitting is the DMH Shifter Adapter

The fuel door is aluminum, from a mitsubishi eclipse - you can find them on ebay pretty cheap.

Thanks for the comments.

I pulled my whole Y-pipe to gut my cat...I wanted to just disconnect the I-pipe and gut it but the I-pipe was getting in the way too much (yeah I coulda loosened it and moved it but I was stupid ). If you end up dropping the y-pipe, be careful...I snapped off 2 of the studs on the exhaust manifold, 1 on each side...I drilled out the holes and replaced em with bolts, but it's still leaking some on the passenger side...I "fixed" it a little better a few days ago but for now it's as good as it's gonna be til I get headers

Be careful not to breath the dust that comes from the cat. Because it contains asbestos.
