Working on installing my tray as well.
Aftermarket tray or OEM?
To my knowledge you want it as close as possible without touching.
I know the minimum distance for the Milodon tray using there install kit is .100 inches from the crank per their directions.

I don't speak from experience so hopefully others will chime in but I didn't want to leave you swinging in the wind.

an aftermarket one is only gonna give u about 2 horses, if you dont have the main caps with the extended bolts to feed through the holes in the windage tray, scrap the tray all together because it will be hitting your crank. im not using one and it runs fine without it.

The Moroso pan has a baffle in it, but not a windage tray per say. We use that here. The ARP 234-5501 has provisions for a tray, but they are too short to use the stock tray.
