How do you check for a spun bearing?

Other than cutting open the oil filter....can you take the oil pan off and be able to tell? Or would a mechnic have to pull the entire engine to check?

Knocking sound, fluttering oil pressure, metal in oil, locked up motor All symptoms, maybe others can chime in with more.

I don't have knock, idle is fine, oil pressure stays around 15-17.5 at idle, depending on temp, 45 psi at WOT, and doesn't overheat.

Last two oil changes, I found some 'glitter' in my oil. There were about 30 pieces, none big enough to feel between your fingers. The car has what appears to be a minor case of lifter tick/or exhaust leak, but I dunno. I'm taking it to the mechanic this week, and wanted to know what he will do to check.

Some backround info: I got the car a little over a year ago, with 32k miles on it. Carfax showed that it was a 'clean' car, and the last emmissions test it had was back in 98, with 30k mles on it. Basically, the owner put 2k miles on it in the four years before I bought it

I'm wondering if the bearings went bad because it sat for so long. Other than the minor lifter tick, the motor runs strong...no surging, stumble, hesitation, ect. Temps are normal, and there are no symptoms of a spun bearing...just the metal flakes.

I was planning on going forged/383/396 sometime soon...but just not right NOW. How much can I expect it to cost to be rebuilt to stock specs?

im not trying to scare you, but mine did that for about a week...then lost power and all the lifters started knocking...after it just would barely move anymore i tore it down to find a cam bearing that was spun about 170* ... but now i have a forged 355 on the way

You look until you see this, then you stop looking.

A spun rod or main bearing will normally give a knock, sometimes maybe just on startup and then more constant after the engine is warmed up. It would depend on the severity.

WOW...how long did it run with the spun bearing??...my cam doesnt look like it has any extra wear on it, the bearing does...but the motor barely ran when i pulled it

Ummm... probably about 50 miles of "machining while you drive". Unfortunately, there was a little too much taken off.

Dave, I think mine had a cleaner wear pattern.

Interesting that you pulled your engine before I did and I am back driving mine again...and you're...well...still looking for an oil pump.

Just funnin'. I just put mine back together with stock stuff. Yours should be a bad machine when you get done.

Don't know about it firsthand, but I've heard that if a bearing spins, it'll sound like a squealing belt kind of... Just a constant high pitched squeal or whine. Like I said, I don't know firsthand, this is just what I've heard.

Mine didnt make any noises..It just wouldnt hold an idle very good and also the oil pressure was going up/down and it was running 25 degrees hotter than normal..I spun about 3 mains and 5 rods

Mine did let out a couple short squeals at idle, nothing constant. In pain, I guess. Oil pressure and temp were perfectly normal.
