run up the engine with valve covers up just at idle for about 10 seconds, shut the car off & immidiately take all the rockers off, then push on the pushrods with your hand, a badly collapsed lifter (when they collapse they ussually show this way) you'll be able to push down on the lifter, as in it'll go in, if they are fine then the pushrod won't budge.

Also, another way is to have someone in the car, crank the starter & let off with valve covers off & fuel injector fuses out, stop cranking after about 1 second & look at all the springs that are compressed, watch them for about 20 seconds, see if there is one rocker that going up faster then the rest.

Easiest way that sometimes tells you is take fuel fuses out & keep cranking, if you have an irregular speed up or slow down while cranking that means you either have a collapsed/stuck lifter or a bent valve.

hmmm is there any way to tell w/ the lifter in your hand? I already have the valvecovers off, I bent a valve and am pulling the heads anyways... if the car has been cold for a while can I still try the push on the pushrod thing?
will it go down or does it have to be warm ??

thanks
