how do you change the !#*!*$/#*@ knock sensor?

well, I bought a new knock sensor (no parts store in town had it, so I had to go to the dealership and ended up getting raped for $40) and I tried for about 2 hours tonight to get it out. I've tried using 3/8's and 1/2" drive with various extensions and swivels, and tried an open end wrench from the top. I dont' see any way of getting it out without pulling the oil pan. Can anyone help? BTW, is there any way you can just disable the thing? Driving around w/ 10* retarded timing is getting REALLY old.

Dude it sounds like you were going about it all wrong! Jack the car up and remove it from the bottom.

Damn dude, you paid $40 for something that's a worthless piece of crap when it comes to modding cars

Well you definately need to get it from the bottom.. You have to unplug the connector first, then you can get a socket or wrench on it to take it off from there...

BTW Good luck with all your FALSE KNOCK you have for you down the road

He was kidding, I think. I've been under my car for two hours. I said I might have to remove the oil pan, which, the last time I checked, is on the bottom of the car. theres no straight path at it. And i'd rather have false knock pull my timing back a couple degrees than a broken knock sensor pulling it back 10

True, but you could have invested $0.30 cents in some resistors and be done with it

Good Luck man!

Don't resisitors lower the voltage coming from the knock sensor? if the knock sensor is broken, there is no voltage coming from it, therefore that wouldn't make a difference.

thats funny. the oil pan is on the top of the engine where the differential is.

I believe he meant for you to use the resistors to fool the computer into thinking the knock sensor is working properly and then unplug the sensor all together.

well the only resistor trick i've ever heard of is used to desensitize the knock sensor. but like I said, doing this would have no effect because the knock sensor is broken. if there's some way I can get by without it, and not get an SES light, i'll do it.

Sorry...I don't know what to tell ya. I'm gonna assume that you still have the stock exhaust manifolds on, which may be the problem. It might be easier and a whole lot less messy to remove the y-pipe instead of the oil pan.

Well that's probably what i'm gonna do, but there still won't be a whole lot of room down there. Plus the fact that the stupid nut on the thing is kinda round so its starting to strip. I got a couple good bites on it and its just tearin it up

All sensors work by varying the amount of resistance to the current that the computer reads from them. If you unplug the sensor and place a resistor in the wires from/to the computer, then the computer will think the knock sensor is functioning properly and won't throw any codes or retard the timing. There's a problem with doing this, if you get any real knock, there's nothing to tell the computer that the engine is knocking and the timing won't be retarded which could possibly damage the engine.

I forgot to mention that you'll need to remove the starter also for maximum clearance.
