How do LT1's Hold up to Mileage?

If i'm in the wrong forum.. Please move me.

I'm looking to purchase an Automatic 100K Mile LT1 to turn into a Project car. It's a Stripper... No Leather.. Not sure it has any Power options Either. The Theme of this project is to turn it into one of the best sleepers around. Now i've had my eye on a 5L foxbody but i prefer the LT1 because i've owned F-Bodies before and enjoyed them.

First questions are going to be

1. Will a 100K Mile LT1 Handle the Abuse?
2. Should i Do a rebuild if i'm going to do Heads and Cam?
3. Speed Inc. as an LT1 355 Rebuild Package.. Does this look good for the Money?

SPORTSMAN SHORT BLOCK INCLUDES
-Polished& refinished factory LT1 crankshaft
-Forged 5.70” or 5.85”: rods
-Diamond Flat top Piston w/2cc reliefs or -8.6cc Boost pistons
-Diamond Pro-select rings
-High performance bearings
-ARP main bolts
-Fully balanced/blueprinted/Bored +.030” Finish hone w/torque plate, assembled

$2,799.99

4. Why the hell doesn't Paxton make a Novi 2000 Kit? Throwing that on top of a Built LT1 would have been fun.

Thanks guys and i look forward to reading more on this site.

It will be fine. Do heads and a cam on the stock bottom end, then start saving for a low compression shortblock and a supercharger. Since you will already have good heads, you will be able to make a mean sunofabitch that way.

Call Lloyd.

You'll probably need to rebuild the 4L60E transmission very soon after adding that extra power too.

It would have to be rebuilt anyway. I was thinking about Ported LT1/LT4 heads, Ported LT4 intake, Nice Cam, Hookers, Borla, and possibly throw a D1 Procharger kit on top of it when i'm done. Will need to address the Rear end also but a Moser will take care of that.

Who has the Best Ported Heads out there for the LT1?

The car will be fine. As others have said it is def. time to have the tranny rebuilt. I have have seen stock LT1's with over 100k miles on them lay down low 14 high 13 sec. times. From what I know they stock bottom end will run forever if you take care of it. With a heads/cam kit, rebuilt tranny and new rearend it will be good to go for a long time. Although it would be much more fun with a 355 and a SC

Yep, mine had close to 100k on it when it ran 13.74 at 100 mph in 100% bone stock trim.

I had 150,000 miles when I replaced my cam and it has over 250,000 now and still as solid as ever. Original tranny and rear too. Of course I don't race it. It's the wife's daily driver but it can still get up and go when you need it!

Or spend $3200 at golens for an all quality forged 383 shortblock. Sure beats that deal

Considering the 396cid is only 300 dollars more... The hell with the 383

That Shortblock topped off by some Nice flowing heads would make an Awesome N/A Sleeper.

Thank you for posting this

DO note though that with a 396 you'll have to run a deep race oil pan (~$350) because of stroke clearance issues, but yes, golens does good stuff for good prices.

Thank you Again. Going to give them a call and see if they can give me the Ultimate F/I Shortblock.

BTW - Thank you everyone who posted in this thread. I went to look at the Z28 today and i'm so inlove with it. It's exactly what i'm looking for. It has 101K Miles on it but it ran and felt like a beast. Tranny Cracked shifts at redline without any problems. They're asking 4K and i really see no problem with asking for anything less. It even has a power cloth seat which i ****ing loved. The Goal is to walk KB Cobra's with this Car.
