How do I replace this seal??

I need to replace the water pump drive seal coming out of the timing cover. Can I pull the old seal with a hook on a small slide hammer and then tap it back in with a socket of the same diameter?
Thanks.
Ron

Re: How do I replace this seal??

very difficult to do but yes pull it out with a hook of some sort...then use the "old ondian trick" as i was told...when u buy somehtin from the store like a toy or w/e and it comes in that plastic crap thats flexible cut a piece of that to go around the seal bc there a ruber piece in it that needs to face inward not ******d u will see what i mean when u get the old seal out then put plastic around it and socket and hammer to get back in...hope that helps

That seal should be obvious as to how it is installed. Run a thin bead of RTV around the part that sits in the timing cover hole, and use a socket just big enough to fit over the flange of the seal, then tap it in square. Wa lah!

obvious, but not quite that easy, use the trick Daniel posted, if that lip faces out, it will leak

Re: How do I replace this seal??

There was a very good post about this some time ago, don,t know if it will still come up in a search.
I had big problems getting that seal in as well, one of the guys on this board told me to take the WP drive shaft which is the same diameter as the shaft your trying to get the seal on and lube it up and install your seal on it with the rubber lips facing the right ways and now put the driveshaft on and walk the new seal onto the shaft in the timing cover once its on and close to going all the way in use a socket the same diameter as the metal part of the seal and tap it into place.

It took me 5 minutes to install that seal once I knew this trick.

I found that a Sharpie marker cap was the right diameter to provide a ramp to install the seal without rolling over the inner lip. Just lube it up.
