Thumbs up How to do head gasket on lt1

Ok so heres the deal I just picked up a 1993 Camaro Z28 and the owner before me took the heads off it because he said they were cracked from it overheating. So im picking up some new heads and head gaskets and was just wonderings if theres a write up to put the heads back on the car so I know where everything goes. Also a write up for the timing since the distributor was tooken off.
One more thing im not sure about this opti spark thing but just wondering where it is and if im going to need anything special to put it back on if it was tooken off the car im not sure if it was.

Shoebox is your new best friend.

You may have some questions after you read everything but this is the best place to start.

Good luck.

Optispark is on the front of the engine. I'd also strongly advise you to get a Haynes or Chilton's manual for the car. It isn't great, but it answers a lot of common questions and has decent procedures.

go out and buy a Haynes Repair manual for the 93-02 camaro/firebird. It, along with shbox's site and the guys on here helped me get through mine with little trouble even though i had limited tools and limited mechanical knowledge

It's simple. Drain the fluids and unbolt everything until the head comes off. Don't forget the steam pipe around the back.

You can use this when you put them back on. BTW, don't reuse the stock head bolts.

Im suprised to see people on the board recommending the Haynes and Chilton manuals over the factor manual which could be had on ebay. I have found that both Haynes and Chilton always seem to leave some nuance out which causes me a head ache. I always go pay for the factory manual..

Factory manual is far too large and detailed for me. The Haynes is more user friendly.

+1. I don't even use my Haynes manual anymore. Way too vague.

For the heads, make sure you put the gasket right side up (it is labeled UP). Don't forget thread sealant on the head bolts. Now would also be a good time to upgrade to a set of ARP head bolts.

i just did head gaskets on mine. make sure u do all new head bolts and torque them down to the right specs. then go ahead and put ur rockers and pushrods in. before u put the intake manifold on make sure u put on the metal antifreeze line that has two banjo bolts on the back of the heads. then use RTV sealant and put the intake mani. on and the rest is simple after u torque that down

order that i did everything was...
1.place head gaskets on.
2.put heads on and torque them down to specs.
3.adjust and tighten rockers(certain way to do this)
4.exhuast manifolds/headers install
5.prep area for intake manifold, then place gasket and put heavy RTV on back and place manifold down carefully.
6. torque that down to specs(pain in the ***)
7. then plug everything back in and put in valve covers/alternator/serpintine belt
8. spark plugs and put in all fluids then start and bleed lines. check for leaks.
