yeah, autozone will scan it for you, but probably wont be able to tell you what it is, the good thing about it is that you can get the code from them and look it up on shoebox's tech page at http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech1.html. there is a list of codes there that will tell you like the opti and stuff. It seems like the opti is 15... or 16.... somthing, cant remember.

Hate to say this but sounds like you might be out of gas, check it. If not could be your fuel pump. Also, check plug wires and see if it is throwing a code.

Thanks for your help!
turn the key to the on position with radio/ac off. listen for the fuel pump to prime the lines. or use a fp gauge.
I'll bet its the opti though.
did the car have a slight skip or miss to it before it died?

Ive had this problem a few times since I've owned the car (2 years)
Usually it'd be after sitting for a day or two (weekend) and then waking up on monday to goto work.
I found out if I rev it while its cranking over, and hold the rpm around 2k for about 30-1minute, itll blow out a bit of black smoke and the car when then run fine, or idle at 500rpm.
My car also idles at 500 pretty often now, its gotten worse over the past year. Most people point it towards my opti, or my ignition system in general.
Usually it runs fine at 500 althrough the oil pressure that low really worries me. Sometimes it wants to go below 500 and it begins to feel like its gonna choke and die.. Usually at lights Ill pull the ebrake up and rev (m6) to 1k.

you can use this link to test the ign and fuel systems to figure out whats going on. but of you say when it starts and you hit the gas it just bogs I am going to guess fuel problems.

I was wondering what's the easiest way to tell if your optispark is vented?
I have a MY95 formula, but according to carfax it was BUILT in Canada, I'm pretty sure something I read said '94
Are ALL MY95 cars vented? Doesnt matter when it was built, long as it's 95?

i want to say it's the fuel pump. my 94Z did the same thing a couple years ago. i could drive for a while and it would just die and wouldnt' start. after i let it set for a while it would start right up! same thing happened with the old Buick Regal
Autozone can not pull codes from OBDI cars. And the '95 is even worse. It has OBDI diagnostics with an OBDII connector. '95 owners will have to find someone with the proper equipment to pull codes or scan the engine.
Well i think it was the gas because i put in some B12 chemical tool and let it run for a couple of mins, then drove it to the gas station and put some high grade gas, and it runs fine now...... also, the "silencer" was missing from my intake system....
i clogged it with a cap but whats a good fitting object that will be a perfect fit besides what they sell for 35$
