Only thing i can say what ever you do scraping or otherwise, have a shopvac runnin at all times to get the loose stuff. You dont want chunks down in the oil pan.

Maybe scrape some of it with a shopvac going to pick up the crud right away, but after that it will still need work. I would strongly discourage the use of a solvent motor flush especially if this problem is as bad as it sounds. Instead try a product called AutoRX, more info available here http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi this is not the manufacturers site but rather a bunch of oil fanatics who can help. This stuff will slowely disolve the deposits and deposit them in the filter or keep the suspended till you drain it, the problem with solvents is it can knock big chunks loose and clog a passage. Another possiblity would be a diesel oil they are very high in detergents and might help, you just need to find one in a reasonable weight. I have been running Rotella T synthetic in my car in the 5w-40 weight, it is gas rated and is only $12.88 a gallon at Walmart so it is cheap(for synthetic) and easy to find. I would recommend frequent filter changes after you put it back together, a few hundred miles after I switched to that oil I noticed the motor getting louder, it was telling me to change the filter. On the filter anything but Fram the Walmart brand filters are actually better and cheaper if you want or you could go with AC Delco or your prefered brand I would just use something inexpensive since you will be changing it a few times quickly.
