How can you tell if you have titanium retainers?

I'm about to go do a valve spring swap, and bought all new comp hardware. I want to make sure I don't have titanium retainers on my car right now before I put all new steel hardware on though, so is there any way to tell without any special tools?

Would a Magnet work? I have used them in the past (firing pins on firearms) on other parts when unsure what material is used.
