used stock lifters with 108k on them with my cam install -

9k later - 27 track passes - and almost daily reving her to about 6500 no problems. actually after seeing this thread decided to pull my intake and valve covers and check everything out and everything still looks and runs perfect.

Re: How can it happen without warning like this?

I had experience with a pushrod bending, one of my valves managed to not be adjusted correctly.. i drove for maybe 2 days no problems, next thing i know bang bang bang and my PR looks like a rainbow. no idea how it happened but i was lucky enough to shut the motor off at a roll and do no damage. and as far as the lifter goes im not sure if you have gone any farther such as taking he intake manifold off, but if you get the car back to running and their is a noise, run some oil down each PR just flowing down into it, one at a time, if it shuts up after one of them (or quiets down) u have a collapsed lifter, helped me out a bit when i did it.

It's strange that the otehr pushrods are fine, and only the original pushrod is bent. It could be that the replacements are hardened pushrods, and the original stocker was a non hardened one. Lifters just don't go bad for any reason..especially a stock lifter.

but being the comp-r lifters and the bad stories I have heard about them....it may still be best to take a look at it just to make sure.

sorry, didn't read they were comp-R's in that case I'd pull them and check them all out. For the 305 Cam you should be fine with stock or stock replacement lifters.

IMO ya need to take them out and put in the stock ones back.
There is no advantage to running them and a lot less work with the stock ones.

I had 123K on the stock ones....is there something I can look for as far as wear goes on the stock lifters?

Wash them off(don't submerge), check for cracks in the lower half, check to see if they roll smooth, check to see if there is any slack (up/down) in the roller. If they look OK put them in,get a new push rod of the same type as others, set the with the intake off as I outlined above, crank her up and hope it ain't missing OR do the leak test first on that cyl and know for sure. If nothing else just put air in the hole and listen for leaks.

just pulled the intake off and the lifter looked just like it was new...well except with oil on it. guess that pushrod just couldn't handle it anymore....

It looks like the bent pushrod isn't a hardened pushrod. You need to run hardened pushrods with non SA rockers. Replace that pushrod with a hardened piece and you'll be fine.

crappy thing is I don't think I can buy just 1 pushrod. Seems I have to spend around $100 for 16 just to use 1

I also have some PR's if you want to use them but they are stock ones and I'm sure you don't wanna go through this again. But like I say, if you wanna use them till you get you some better ones you can. They came out of my 94 camaro BTW.

You need to use hardened pushrods.

I have some hardened stock length PR's if you want them. PR's aren't that expensive either. I think they are around $35 for a set.
