How big a cam will make power in an LT1

We're in the process of building a max'ed out LT1 engine. The goal is: maximum power from the stock-style LT1 block, intake, and heads. So far, here's the plan:

4.030 x 3.875 = 395 cid
11.8/1 compression and 6" rods
AFR 210's, bowl blended with short-turn work
Ported LT4 intake
Shaft rockers
Large solid roller cam

Similar dirt-track builds have netted us 600-640 fwhp, so we'd like to get over 600 with this one.

For the cam, I started out with a proven dirt-track solid roller: 262/268-106, +4. Since the LTX intake doesn't have much ram-tuning effect, I closed the intake valve earlier. The spec's I came up with are 258/268-106, +6. The problem is, I've never heard of anyone using a cam that size in an LTX. Most people with solid rollers stay in the 240 - 250 range.

Does anyone have a guess as to how this cam will work in an LTX?

Thanks,
Mike

Naw. . . I like the streetability of the small cam/turbo.

This is for another Wall-2-Wall customer. Craig or Geoff will likely tune it on the dyno, though. Or maybe you?

Were you the guy that came down a couple weeks ago to tune Craig's car? If so, we've met.

Craig's new headers look totally bad-@ss!

Tim (95bird) is running a Cam Motion 255/263 110 LSA solid. I know some guys in our Corvette club running similar mechanical cams with good success on the street. These guys are in the 250-260 range, 110-112 LSA, .55-.620 lift.

An engine I put together for a friend a while back put 500 to the rear wheels with a hydraulic. AFR215RR heads, custom CFE intake and all the bells and whistles minus big $ billet rotating assembly parts. Engine was a 355 too.

You shouldn't have much trouble with the right work... mainly in the cylinder heads.

Yeah I was him,

Did they dyno the new headers to see if it picked up anything?

They were just working on installing them yesterday. It looks like that's going to be a real challenge (PITA)!

1 7/8" -> 2" step headers

MG is right on my cam. I just went to 1.6 rockers from 1.52 so we will see how it likes even more lift now and opening the valve faster. Lift is around 690/652 now. If ya'll are going max effort why the low CR. I run 12.5 on pump gas. Also..for a stroker..on a max effort I would go bigger than that. I'm still fighting top end problems but on a good dyno pull it was just starting to fall of at 7200 rpms..down about 5-7 rwhp over its peak at 6800.

Why dont you give one of the cam guru's a call/PM?? Brett Bauer,Comp Cams,Advanced Induction, Mr.Overton,etc...

I dont see any reason why that cam wouldn't work, its just huge

Because the engine builder has way more actual engine building experience and dyno time than any of those guys, except maybe Comp - but when you call them you get a burger-flipper. He's tried all sorts of cams and found a grind that makes great power. I just modified his spec's a bit for the LTX intake manifold and wanted to know if anyone else has gone that big.

i am running a 25x/26x solid roller with mid 600 lift with 1.6 RRs.
No problems here so far.

Are you talking about that engineer Arty? That guy was very impressive.. hes made me learn more about everything as a engineer myself.

This guy built his own CNC machines, restores old machinery, make his own camshafts, engine dynos (2) and software to run the dyno, press forms, etc.. Really exceptionally smart guy.

I agree with you on Arty. . . but I was actually talking about Ronnie Rogers (the same guy that build Craig's 680 hp beast).
