How bad is over heating an LT1?
How bad is over heating an LT1?
It rained for the first time since I got the engine back together... The stupid POS fuse holder that came with Meizer electric water pump got water on it and grounded to something, which blew the fuse so the water pump shut off. I drove it for 5 minutes and the check guages light came on. I was very lucky to even notice it, anyway the coolant temperature was pegged. I pulled over, shut off the engine, coolant billowed out of the hood and then I towed it home. Fixed it all up and now I have what sounds like rod knock. Any thoughts?
Re: How bad is over heating an LT1?
I had a thermostat fail suddenly and I got my car hot enough to have the gauges flash before I cut it off. Got off with no problems-luck, I guess, but it can happen. A new noise afterwards would make me worry. Sounds like it needs looking into.

Let's see...... I had a meziere pump not come on at all one day and overheated the motor (yes, the supplied fuseholder is a POS), that resulted in a blown head gasket.
Next the radiator clogged up and overheated the car- that resulted in a cracked block.
You overheat these cars and you're pretty much [ EDIT ].

Re: How bad is over heating an LT1?
Typically, overheating for a short while won't crack the block and warp the heads. Although I suppose that is possible. The knocking makes me nervous, and I would have it looked at before driving it again. Hopefully it's something relatively easy/inexpensive to fix.
I think Javier has you pointed in the right direction for diagnostics.
Oil in the coolant or coolant in your oil might indicate a blown gasket or a crack/leak somewhere.
If worst comes to worst, I think a few of the vendors are having sales on shortblocks over in the GP section.

Re: How bad is over heating an LT1?
Well, I caught the overheating almost instantly. Like I drove maybe 8 minutes from my house on the way to my office. In that time the water shorted and melted the wire coating all the way down to the radiator edge (where it was touching), which then shorted enough to blow the fuse. It couldn't have done this before I drove because that line is only hot once the ignition is on. I saw the check guages light flash on and turned it off almost immediately. A few seconds later with the ignition on, engine off, the temperature wasn't in the red anymore.
I changed the oil today and no milkshake
Having changed the head gaskets not more than 2 weeks ago I already decided that if the gaskets blew again I would buy a bike for the summer and do a stroker rebuild. Thankfuly that's not the case, because I'm too broke to afford either.
Now that I've looked at it after a good nights rest I think the sound is more valve train related than anything. I also noticed I forgot to plug the intake temperature unit in after I removed it to access the waterpump bleed screw. Doh. Obviously that had something to do with how funny the car was running.

Re: How bad is over heating an LT1?
I dont have an answer for you. But what I can tell you is last week I left OC after the Big Cruise, and about 5 blocks from the hotel, I noticed the "CHECK GAGES" light in my 96 Z28. Looked at the temp gage and it was also pegged. Figured the thermostat stuck. Cooled the car then made a dash from the shoulder of the road to a parking lot. Found the inline bus fuse which came with my SUMMIT electric water pump had melted. dont know why. But it obviously kept the water pump from running, causing me an overheat. I just cut out the wire, and drove the car home with a jumper wire in place of the fuse. Rewired it with a nice 30amp inline fuse from a line-loc kit and she's purring like normal. No noises. I know it dont help , but wanted to let you know your not alone with the water pump fuse malfunction...

Demus, whats wrong with your oil? I cant really tell. It doesnt look like milkshake. But it does look like metal shavings. I cant see very well.
Re: How bad is over heating an LT1?
Yes, lots of metal shavings in the oil. I'm kind of confused... I just checked the engine with a stethoscope and everything sounds normal. The valve train is a little loud, but I think within the realm of normal. There's no screeching, there's no missing, no stumbling, etc.
