hotcam???

Im putting a hotcam into my 94z and im going to use the 1t4 springs with crane 1.6 rr's. My questions are:

1) Do i need to replace my bearings. I have 75000 miles on car, and its my daily driver? It seems that there is about a 50/50 chance on spinning a bearing with a cam install. I really dont want to replace them, but I do want to hear oppinions. btw I way a elect. wp.

2) Does the hotcam need to rev to 6500 rpms? That seems what most are reving to after my search. I kinda want to keep my rpms around 5800 to 6200.

I will be getting a dyno tune right after install as well.

thanks for you advice.

I'm not going to say whether or not you should replace the bearings. I got mine replaced only because i had a blown head gasket so i just went ahead and got the whole engine rebuilt. I'd say it just matters how clean the install is. And no you dont have to rev to 6500 but you wont get the most out of it by only revving to 6. Right now i only rev mine to 6 since i havent got mine retuned yet.

So i hope that answered some of your questions.

1) depends on its maintenance history. I put my cam kit in someone around 100K and everything is fine.

2) my rev limiter is set at 6300. I'm peaking at 6K. But I'm also running stock exhaust.

Some of the theories for spinning bearings are guys having to spin their motor up pretty high to take advantage of a bigger cam, some say it's due to not keeping dirt and other solid materials out of the engine (dirty cam install), I've heard claims of block distortion when taking off and re-installing heads and some might just be due to bad luck. I put some ported heads and a HOTcam on my car when it had well over 100k miles and I didn't replace my bearings. The front cam bearing was showing some wear, but all the bearings in the motor survived.

I had my shift points set at 6200 and the car ran fine. I don't have tuning capabilities so I wasn't able to play around with the shift points so I can't say for sure if it was optimal or not. If you're only comfortable going to 6200 then go for it.

Re: hotcam???

My mechanic said that If i want to do a cam swap, that i should just go one step above my stock cam. does anyone know where the hotcam stands, when compared to stock.

I know the hotcam is milder than the cc305 and cc306. is there one less say stock, ______, hotcam. fill in the blank.

I would replace them... And I make max power at about 6 so I shift at 6100. Dyno it and that will tell you where to shift bud.

i know the cc305 is a little more than the hot cam... but look into it. i have 2 friends running it with same mods as u at 8.2x in the 8th mile.

i think if you go less than hotcam u might be disapointed... since your spending this much on doing it make sure you get what you want for the longrun
