Hooker catback vs Edelbrock...

I know theirs been alot of threads on cat backs. Ive read hours on what peoples opnions are on them and listened to them on ls1sounds.com. Ive learned a SLP loudmouth on my car will sound like **** and flowmaster blow's unless you have a mustang. Sorry but im still not satasfied. Im wanting a good sounding aswell as performing cat back in the 200-300$ range. Hooker cat back is going for $279.95. Edelbrock $283.95. I dont have $800 for a cat back so borla and GMMG are totally out of the question. Though i will be useing a cat, im going to have a cutout welded on behind it. So maybe a loudmouth isint out of the question. From what people have said as soon as your stock manifolds are gone the loudmouth is soon following behind. Anyone running these cat back's or something similar? Im going to be heading to summit monday or tuesday to pick something up.

I replaced my Hooker with the Edelbrock and love it. Nice deep rumble. Both sound really good though. On my car the Hooker was as quiet as a stock exhaust while cruising, but really came to life when you opened it up. In my personal opinion though the Edelbrock sounds awesome. Keep in mind though that I have headers and no cats, so that will make a difference.

Re: Hooker catback vs Edelbrock...

Have you looked at and/or ruled out the Magnaflow?
That was what I went with because I wanted a decent sounding catback on an otherwise stock exhaust system, at a sub $300, and it had to be stainless steel.

Huh. Seems the 15620 has gone up in price. That puts it out of the $300 ballpark, so I guess you'll have to deal with the chance of rust, and a different system.

I like the Magnaflow too. All stainless, polished tips & muffler, sounds great, $300 price range. Can't go wrong!

I've been extremely happly with the Hooker catback.

Here is a sound clip of the Hooker catback. It's very close to how it sounds in real life. This is not my car, but it is a good recording:

Here is my combo. See signature for details:

Here's a in car blast:

Video of valvetrain, with the Hooker idle sound at the end of the video:

Video comparing stock to the MAC headers and Hooker catback:
Stock driving to the left in the video, Hooker catback driving to the right. It was windy the day I recorded the Hooker catback, so it doesn't sound as good as it should:

Thanks alot dan. The hooker cat back does sound awesome. Its going to be either the hooker or loudmouth, whatever is in stock.

i actually think the "loudmouth" on stock manifolds sounds pretty damn good i heard it on a 95 z28 and i was very impressed pretty deep and throaty i would definatly go with slp "loudmouth".

Re: Hooker catback vs Edelbrock...

My friend has the Hooker cat-back on his LT-1, and my previous exhaust was the Edelbrock Cat-back. We both agreed that we liked the sound of my Edelbrock more. I have since pitched it in favor of the Magnaflow unit, another good sounding cat-back but its biggest selling point with me was that it was an AFFORDABLE stainless steel unit.

Re: Hooker catback vs Edelbrock...

Im installing MAC headers on my TA which currently has SLP LM. I've heard clips and videos of this same set up and it seems to me that if you run a cat or two with it it sounds bad ***. I will have mine installed this weekend with (hopefully) a custom dual cat Y pipe. I will let you know how it sounds, maybe post a video.

Re: Hooker catback vs Edelbrock...

Look around for a used corsa or borla.

I can also reccomend the Random-Tech, sounds dang close to the corsa, which IMHO is the best sounding catback.

Please dont get a loudmouth dude........

Re: Hooker catback vs Edelbrock...

hooker, hooker, hooker, hooker!!!!!!!! i love my hooker exhaust. It is a little louder than stock at idle, but it is very deep and sounds awesome at WOT!!!!! The best chose by far, get the hooker, you wont regret it!!!
