homw much timing chain slack?

ive searched but found no specific measurement, all ive read is "there tends to be alot" but define alot? i installed my low low milage timing set (i put 300 miles on it and the lower end took a poo) and theres a ton of slack. we then tried the set off my 95 and there was the same amount of slack. it moves about 1/4 inch maybe a little more back and forth.

Ummm... none. My timing chain with 120K on it had no slack when I did my heads/cam. Reused it for another 10K pulled it out and it still had no slack.

That's about how the stock chain in my 94 looked at 15k miles.

No slack? That's rare, very rare.

Dunno, guess I just got lucky, my chain now doesn't have any slack either.

Mine was pretty stretched at <50K, we replaced it as part of the H/C install.
Nice it tight now

mine with 55k on it had a decent about of slack, I would say its normal. With only 300 miles on it I would resuse it...

Loose LT1 timing chains is a common thing, if you get lucky and yours is not loose good for you. If yours is loose and it bothers you get one of these: http://www.thunderracing.com/catalog...vid=4&pcid=222

Read that whole page and you will see what I mean.

wouldn't an oversized crank sprocket (as they suggest in that link) throw off the gear ratio between the cam and crank sprockets? The only way I can see it not affecting the ratio is if they somehow increased the diameter yet maintained the same number of teeth as stock and are still able to smoothly engage the teeth with the chain.
