I don't know alot about petroleum chemistry but I would assume that these two chemicals are the reason why people say it's not good to wash your hands with gasoline. They are in such a small amount though that many think it is fine as long as you don't do it every day or something.

I've used xylene quite a few times in the GN. Never had a problem with it.
If you really want to learn about it, head here and do a search on it. You will find more information on it than you can handle.
And I don't think anyone there has ever had a problem with it.
