Homemade Catback

Just thought some of you may be interested to see my homemade setup, I fitted the system as an experiment really, to import a proper catback is going to cost me some serious money, so I wanted to hear what the car would sound like with no muffler, but just a free flowing pipe to the back.

I removed my stock muffler and replaced it with 3 sections of 3" pipe, it cost me about £50 ($100).

It sounds pretty nice too, here are a couple of clips of before and after for comparison:

Stock Exhaust

Custom Exhaust

I noticed a definate gain with my GTech, the car seems to hold the peak acceleration for a lot longer through the rpm range, although I seem to have lost a little torque right down the bottom end/off idle.

Couple of pics:

Nice, I think if you added a bullet muffler in there it would sound alittle better.Maybe in the I-pipe. You freaked me out drivnin on the wroung side of the road.

I bet a few things in that clip don't seem quite right to you yanks!

Ok, so if I were to put a bullet muffler in the system, would it make it deeper? or just quieter? or both?

I don't want to lose too much sound level as its a great sound, but I think the slight raspiness could do with being eliminated.

ha, the left side of the road thing scared me at first "wtf is he doing?!" ...the bullet muff wont take away any level of sound, it'll just make it sound more refined by ridding of some raspiness

At first I thought you were drunk and driving on the wrong side of the road. Then I saw your license plate

Re: Homemade Catback

You could have saved your self the 100 bucks and just cut your I pipe before the axle and if you wanted put a turn down on it.

Re: Homemade Catback

Doesn't sound bad for a custom job. A bullet muffler would sound similar but it would help with the crackling.

Re: Homemade Catback

dude that is great, nice job with it. No need for a muffler in there, sounds like a SLP loudmouth setup. If you add a muffler you just get more backpressure, keep it the way it is

Real men run no mufflers, no cats, no emissions, and shake the ground they drive upon

Re: Homemade Catback

Quick question...how do you get away with no front licence plate? I have been told NOT to take it off or automatic on the spot fine!

Re: Homemade Catback

i would vote for the muffler as well, i dont like the raspiness of it, just not good to me. But kudos on the custom exhaust work

I take it you clicked on the link in my sig, I took the plate and the bracket off just to see how it looked, I took a photo while I was at it.

Running no plates is of course illegal and I am considering mounting the front plate inside the windscreen as I think having it down there on the front of the car ruins the look a bit.
