ALL my SBC's down through the years didn't have them and they were fine. A new chain was installed on them every season on the sprint cars. The chains used back the were from GM off of a school bus and were double roller. The only place ya could get a double chain for a 327.

She fired up on the first shot 
Sounds great, but it was kinda late and there's still some more work to do (bleed the brakes, add coolant, check rockers) before I can take her out.
Should be back on the road tomorrow, it's been a long week tho!
