Highest Mileage when doing cam swap
Highest Mileage when doing cam swap
Hmm, after reading some threads about spun bearings and what not, I figured I'd like to see what type of risk im up against when I go for a cam swap.
I have 84K miles on my 93 lt1, and am gonna do a hotcam kit in the winter when the driving season is over. This car has been babied and garaged most of its life, and never really driven hard(not sure if that matters!).
Anyway, Im curious as to who here has done a successful cam swap with the highest mileage? Did you eventually spin a bearing? Still going strong? How high are you revving?

Re: Highest Mileage when doing cam swap
I installed the hotcam kit with 138,000 miles on the clock.
Haven't had any problems so far. Drove the car for about 700 miles
to get it broken in. The pcm was tuned by pcmforless, so i'm
reving at about 6,200 rpms.

Nice, that is encouraging
. This is the stuff i am hoping to hear. I am gonna do it anyway...but just wanted to see what my odds were. Im a gamblin man.
I figure if its done right, and if the engine is in good shape regardless of miles, it wouldn't be a problem.

The hot cam is still making power up at 6800??
. Where does it signifigantly fall off generally?

. i was gonna say.. i figure the best shift points would be between 6200-6400. would be nice to have a screaming small block churning up around 7K

Re: Highest Mileage when doing cam swap
For you heads/cam guys. When did your installation did you follow Shoebox's guide for it, and was it very accurate? When I do mine I plan on using that as well as a Haynes manual. I am mechanically inclined, me and 1 friend changed the clutch in my V6 FWD Maxima in 11 hours and that job was a B!TCH so I don't think this will be as hard.
Re: Highest Mileage when doing cam swap
130,000 miles on my car and it turned over 411rwhp/372rwtq after doing my heads/cam install. it made that power at 6,000RPMs since i had an overtightened rocker causing the valves to float after that.
when you install the heads id yank the motor. i did. replaced all the seals, gaskets etc. i could get my hand on and damn am i glad i did it out of the car. got to paint the block up, it looks good. plus you can check for any play in any of your rod and main bolts. it's WAY easier out of the car. you should definitely consider it. i dont think i'd feel comfortable torquing head bolts in the car. stuff is a little too critical.
