Higher than normal idle and surging of rpms

1995 A4 LT1 Camaro full exhuast no motor work

My idle in my car is higher than normal. Not too bad but something is definitely wrong. It's maybe a couple hundred rpm's to fast and sometimes it pulses going up and down real quick. Never gets any higher than a few hundred. I cleaned the whole throttle body a few months ago and opened it up to check that the blades aren't sticking. The throttle cable appears fine. Any suggestions?

Re: Higher than normal idle and surging of rpms

Update:

I replaced the IAC and the problem is still there. The RPM's only go up to about 1600 and sometimes will pulse up and down real quick from 1500 to 1600? Should I replace the TPS next or is there anything else I can try first?

what did it idle at before? My car idles at 1000rom. That is pretty far off. Did it idle high after you installed the TB? Or did you clean it on the car?

Re: Higher than normal idle and surging of rpms

"white knight" the car idles the same after I replaced the IAC. I took the whole throttle body off anyways though just to clean it again when I put on the new IAC. This is just a problem that came out of nowhere one day. It's very evident when I first start the car up and go for a drive. Then when it gets warmed up the idle will go back down to 600-700 RPMS where it should be. Though once it heats up the problems still comes back every once in a while. TPS looks to only be 30 bucks so I might just go buy that too.

This only happens when I let off the gas otherwise the car drives fine and don't seem to be missing a beat.

I don't know...

All hoses connected? Vacuum Leak? check MAF?
Pull the fuse or disconnect the battery to reset your PCM.

Just throwing out ideas

Re: Higher than normal idle and surging of rpms

did you mess with the adjuster screw on the TB?

check for a vacuum leak...sounds like maybe a broken gasket somewhere. possibly dead maf.

Re: Higher than normal idle and surging of rpms

So in theory if it is a bad MAF I could unplug it and the problem shouldn't be there? If so I'll go check that possibility.

Throttle body wasn't touched this problem just came about one day. When the car is warm it likes to sit right at 700 RPMS. When you first start it up you get that annoying pulsing from 15-1600 rpms

Is it an A4 or M6? Try this the next time it happens, put your foot 'under' the gas pedal and push up with some force on the gas pedal. If nothing happens with the RPMs, then it's not the problem I'm thinking of.... but if the RPMs drop back down to normal then it is.

Did you ever find out what it was? Mine is doing the same thing, only it never comes down. It idles at 1100-1200 rpm's all the time. I just changed the opti-spark, the plugs, wires and the waterpump. I think I got all of the hoses back on right......Damnit!

Wow sold my LT1 over a year ago. It ended up being a blown header gasket. I had headers on the car and they came a little loose. I seen some carbon build up on the plugs and wires. Replaced the gasket and the car ran fine. Hope this helps.
