High speed vibrations
High speed vibrations
I was driving down the highway and I noticed that once I got around 80mph a vibration started to occur. I think it might be from an unbalanced drive shaft. Other than that the cars drives perfect. Anyone have this happen?
A lot of LT1 F-bodies from 93-95? have that same problem. From what I've read, it's a driveshaft issue. They did have some sort of recall on them a while ago, but I don't think they do anymore. They were puting in the ILE aluminum driveshaft as a replacement. Still, I'm not sure on the particulars about the recall. They wouldn't do my 93, and it only had 40k miles on it at the time. It's worth a trip to the dealer to find out though!
OLD SKOOL FIX:
Get a hose clamp large enough to wrap around the driveshaft and tighten it down good. Mark where the worm gear is with a black marker or chalk.
Test drive the car and see if the speed at which the vibration occurs changes or if it is gone.
Continue to move the worm gear around the driveshaft untill the vibration is gone or close to gone as it will get with a single hose clamp.
Take a washer and weld it to the driveshaft with a small bead on each side.
Repeat if necessary.
I did it and it worked fine, a buddy of mine did it and couldn't get the vibration out completely.
It doesn't take much weight to affect the drivelines balance considering how fast its spinning. You can try this or take it to a local driveline shop and have them balance it for about $50.
