Help!! With timing cover install
Help!! With timing cover install
Just got all my stuff back from the machine shop and I am in the proccess of installing it. Putting the timing cover on and the seal around the water pump drive keeps tearing when we put it in. Are ther any tricks? Or is this normal? We tried to lubricate it but it still tore. We have gone through two seals and I do not want to mess up another. Thanks for any advice.
I'll let you know tomorrow. I recently got my car back from a cam install and the seal was leaking. I have it all tore down and will be putting the new seal on tomorrow. I have heard that it is easier to install the timing cover without the seal first. Take a little sand paper to the end of the cover shaft that goes over the pump gear. Slide the seal over the cover shaft and then slide the cover shaft/seal over the pump gear. Next, take a deep socket to gently tap the seal into place. This should allow you to install the seal without worry of tearing it. I've got 2 seals on hand just in case. If you try this before I post, let me know so that I know whether it works or not. Good luck,

Well, I got mine on today. I had 2 seals, so the first one I tried to put on without any aid and just tap it in with a deep socket and hammer. Of course, it tore. So, I tried the method I mentioned above. Take the shaft that connects the water pump drive to the drive gear that comes out of the timing cover and sand it down a bit. I have no patience (and no sandpaper) so I used a dremel to lightly and quickly do this. Then you slide the seal over the sanded edge. It should be a pretty tight fit. Now, You just slide the shaft over the gear comong from the timing cover and it stays in place. There was a small o ring on the gear so I removed it so that the shaft goes all the way up to the edge of the gear. I used a deep socket and tapped it on. Slid right over without any tear or even budge from the seal. Very, very easy. Good luck.

I just finished with mine, and had no trouble that I can see so far. I was going to try to put the thing on with the oil pan in place, but that looked like a recipe for trouble, so I took the time to loosen the pan bolts; then I could drop the pan a good inch. It's really not that much work. With the pan lowered, and duct tape around the WP shaft, I simply slid the TC into place and pulled in on nice and evenly with the TC bolts.
Fingers crossed, but it looks good so far.
